Science: Students in second grade have just begun a new unit on plants and seeds. We are studying harvest corn that got wet. The students were excited to see that the wet corn is appear to sprout! We are using scientific questioning, reasoning, and research to answer some central questions: Is this corn real or fake? Is the corn growing? What is growing and where is it growing from? Home Connection: Please ask your child to give evidence when they give an opinion. Ask them to give their opinion or idea using the following sentence frames: " I think...because..." or "I think.... My evidence is..." Math: Next week we will begin a new unit in math about geometry, 2-D shapes, 3-D shapes, and arrays. Some important vocabulary your child will need to know is: quadrilateral, right angle, angle, side, triangle, rectangle, pentagon, and hexagon. Home Connection: Please ask your child to identify shapes they see in the house or in the community. Please ask them to tell you how many sides or angles the shape has. Please remember to continue practicing telling time on the analog clock and reviewing coins!

We will begin a new unit in reading next week! Your child will be learning word solving and comprehension strategies to help them become stronger independent readers. We will also be talking about the elements of fiction including characters and characters' feelings, setting, problem and solution. Finally, we will practice re-telling what we read.
Here are some helpful questions to ask your reader as you read together: For tricky words: Can you tap it out or notice all the sounds? Do you see any parts you know? For comprehension: Who are the characters in this story? How does the character feel right now? How do you know? What is the problem? What is the solution? Can you retell the story? |
